Some thoughts on running.

On running;

I've never enjoyed running as a kid. It's just a rather mindless thing to do, putting one foot after the other and hearing your footstep patter for the full duration that you put yourself through, fighting to keep whatever amount of air you have managed to inhale.

But as I grew older and took to running more often, I began to find that running parallels life in many ways.

I'll start off with the obvious;

Running is painful, and so is life.

Running is a continuous process of pain and suffering, it creeps in slowly and always reaches its worst at the middle of the run. I might be wrong, but I think the same about life.

Life may well be a process of continuous pain and suffering - but you'll learn to ignore it as you continue to push yourself for each step forward. Do that long enough and you may even begin to enjoy the sights while you are suffocating for air.

For whichever path you take, you'll meet people;

It's inevitable.

But what's evitable is not trying to overtake everyone that's in front of you.

Take control of your own pace.

L̶i̶f̶e̶ An evening jog shouldn't be a race where you are pitting against everyone. Sure, you get a momentary sense of satisfaction when you get past the guy in front, but also do remember to congratulate yourself on screwing up your pace for the entire run.

Everyone has a different starting point.

Its simply impossible to get past everyone you meet along your run. You can't decide the starting point for them - but remember that you can always decide the end point for yourself.

Setting goals;

Being able to run continuously without a break requires some form of planning. You start off by picking a certain tree and tell yourself that you'll get there, but the trick is to pick another tree before you reach the original tree you've picked.

Letting yourself reach your goal simply breaks your momentum, but not setting small goals along the way causes you to lose your motivation.
