Have you ever noticed when you are depressed you don’t want to do anything to make yourself happy? Your brain used to be full of good ideas, you had such motivation, you have dreams and plans set in concrete; then it all vanished.
Our brains have a horrible function - when we are sad all we can think about is MORE sad things. When we are bored we are completely out of ideas. Depressed, we feel we can do nothing to fix it.
The advice I give you today: prepare for the winter while in the summer.
If things are going well (or you are at least somewhat functional) start learning techniques to help yourself during those not-so-great times. Relationship going well? Study why, write down those good feelings, write down those reasons why you are in the relationship.
When it comes crashing down you will have a reference point to help bring yourself back up a little faster. It’s not a cure, but you will recover quicker, just as a medicine helps an illness.
I call these my arrows in my quiver. My ammunition. I have built these up over many years and when something goes wrong - whether it be as simple as losing $50, to a severe breakup; the ammunition kicks in “remember you learned about how to cope being single? Remember you promised you would never give up? Remember what that friend said 5 years ago that made you feel confident? Remember how you survived being single last time, and it all worked out?
Build these lines of defences today, start studying the mind, start writing down your thoughts, get your dreams on paper. Prepare for the winter that is most definitely coming as it does every year.
